X-Licence

Context

The ‘X-Licence:’ header indicates that the copyright owner of the post containing it gives permission to copy or publish the post under the stated licence. This includes copying from one network to another and one data transfer protocol to another (for example from Usenet to the World Wide Web and NNTP to HTTP). It also means the copyright owner does not give permission for the post to be reproduced except under that licence.

If a Usenet post contains the header line "X-Licence:x-licence" this indicates the licence concerned is that given below.

Preamble

Usenet is a medium that fosters the sharing of knowledge and free flow of information to the benefit of all and the improvement of society. It is possible for businesses to exploit the goodwill of Usenet contributors by co-opting or 'stealing' the content for their own purposes. This poisons the well of knowledge and discourages giving of content.

This licence protects the health of Usenet; it prevents such theft and allows open sharing of posts.

Nothing in this licence is intended to restrict propagation of posts through Usenet peers and servers following the NNTP protocol and established Usenet conventions.

X-Licence Terms

Definitions

The Usenet message to which this licence applies is termed ‘the post’.

The term ‘original form’ means the full content of the post with all Usenet headers (with the optional exception of hiding email addresses), and without additional content, in an open data format - such as plain text file. This also includes data formats where it is trivial to reconstruct the post in its original form (for example in a zip file).

Permission

Permission is given to reproduce this post - including publishing it on a website - if and only if the following terms are met:

Either

  1. You make the post available only through a Usenet peer or server that uses the standard NNTP protocol and Usenet conventions.

Or

  1. You do all of the following:
